Scream 3 Takes On Halloween H20: 20 Years Later Thanks To A Filming Location – Are They Part Of A Shared Horror Franchise Universe?
Although they belong to different horror franchises, scream 3 connect to Halloween H20: 20 years later, thanks to a particular location in both films. There are thematic similarities between scream 3 and Halloween H20 – for example, they both have Explore the lives of women (Sidney Prescott and Laurie Strode, respectively) who have escaped the clutches of serial killers. There is also a metatextual link: the mansion in scream 3 is the same filming location as the school of Halloween h20. at Wes Craven Scream the franchise is notoriously meta on the slasher horror subgenre, so there are major implications in the universe in linking it to the Steve Miner classic Halloween.
Scream revitalized the slasher movie by mocking and subverting well-established horror tropes, going so far as to include a scene from the 1978 film Halloween. Scream Randy Meeks character explains the rules how to survive a horror movie based on the predictability of Laurie Strode’s fight against Michael Myers, laying the groundwork for criticism. However, Halloween H20 regrowth including a scene of Scream 2, which throws self-aware horror in the same light as any other slasher and causes audiences to question the basic reality of the films. In another crossover, the 2000s scream 3 Sidney Prescott lives in isolation in the same mansion that serves as the school where Laurie Strode hides as a teacher in the 1998s Halloween H20.
scream 3 and Halloween h20 share a universe, but paradoxically. Most meta-narratives are one-sided, like the inclusion of fictitious Stab series within the Scream series as a comment on Scream himself. But how can we Halloween to be in Scream but also show that Scream exists as a movie in the Halloween universe? Professional tributes from scriptwriters and directors apart, the overlap between Halloween H20 and scream 3 proves that these two film franchises not only exist as fiction in each other’s universes, but also influence each other.
This is evident in the way each slasher universe presents the other: simply, like horror movies. It is not uncommon for places like the Paramount Estate mansion to be used as a filming location and so it is not impossible that the mansion (or a replica) exists both in the Scream and Halloween H20 universe as a movie set for each film. An example of the influence of one over the other occurs in Halloween H20 when Michael stalks Laurie in a hallway of the school: the score of Scream plays as she frantically escapes because Laurie’s benchmark for horror is Scream.
The social commentary of these films is not limited to their own universes either: Scream 3, in keeping with his meta-narrative, also functioned as a scathing indictment against Hollywood using his film trope in a movie. In general, the Scream the franchise is based on concepts of intertextuality – mmovies and books line up on backstage shelves, news and network shows play empty on televisions, and the characters cite lines of movies audiences may have seen. The relation between the Scream and Halloween franchisees makes this point more glaring and (of course) more meta, but that doesn’t make it any less interesting. While the Scream the franchise ultimately fell victim to its own tropes, with another episode of Scream (a restart title Scream) with a release date of 2022, it will be interesting to see what Conscious Horror has to say about the present day.
