Good Luck Jerry Trailer Teases Janhvi Kapoor’s Offbeat Crime Comedy

Disney+ Hotstar recently released the first trailer for the upcoming Indian dark comedy good luck jerryfeaturing Janhvi Kapoor as a docile but brave young woman who finds herself embroiled in a drug trafficking operation. The film also features Deepak Dobriyal, Mita Vasisht, Neeraj Sood and Sushant Singh.

The trailer opens with large bold letters announcing that we are in the state of Punjab in northern India. The massive agrarian state, known as “The Breadbasket of India” because of its large wheat production, is also a notorious center for the illicit drug trade. A few years ago, another detective comedy, Udta Punjab, has gotten into trouble with local government over its portrayal of the state as a drug addiction hub. Incidentally, one of the main characters in this film, played by Alia Bhatwas a migrant from the state of Bihar in eastern India.

Jerry, the protagonist of this film, is also a “Bihari”. She finds herself in the midst of a mostly foreign culture, without a father, a terminally ill mother at home, and a younger sister to care for. With her back to the wall, she decides to join a local drug cartel, and become a kind of mule. She stuffs the contraband inside momos, which are a dumpling-style street food that originated in neighboring Tibet and Nepal but is popular across India. She mostly gets away with it because of her unassuming appearance, but is eventually sniffed out and caught up in a turf war. The trailer highlights the offbeat tone of the film, which mixes fish-out-of-water comedy, old-school Indian melodrama, and gritty crime. It ends with a tease from Jerry turning the tables on the men who have been calling the shots so far.
