Deadpool 2 is, against all odds, Brad Pitt’s greatest film

One of the biggest box office surprises of 2016 (if ever, frankly) was ‘Deadpool,’ the R-rated superhero flick that fans basically asked Fox to earn $132 million over the weekend. -opening end en route to $782 million worldwide- without release in China. That being the case, a sequel to Ryan Reynolds’ headed vehicle was secured and hastily put into motion. Creative differences led to the departure of director Tim Miller, with David Leitch, who co-directed “John Wick”, taking over. Leitch also happens to be the man who made “Bullet Train.” Connections!

Since the first “Deadpool” movie made so much money, the filmmakers were allowed to go further with the sequel, which means a bigger budget. Part of that had to do with the arrival of Cable, a hugely popular character from the Marvel Comics world who had yet to appear in live-action. Plus, the movie would bring together the group of mutants known as the X-Force for the first time in the history of the “X-Men” franchise – yet another really big deal. “Deadpool 2” had a rather unique way of dealing with this intro: killing off the entire team within minutes of starting their first mission. This is where Brad Pitt comes in. Kind of.

Before Pitt was offered the smallest of small roles as Vanisher, who appears briefly during the X-Force sequence, the actor was considered for the role of Cable. Ultimately, Josh Brolin landed the role but, as Leitch explained before the film’s release:

“We had a great meeting with Brad, he was incredibly interested in the property. Things didn’t work out timing-wise. He’s a fan, and we love him, and I think he would have done an amazing cable.”
