The evil scientist enlists the help of Knuckles (Idris Elba), a super-powered red echidna who wants nothing more than to defeat Sonic.


Although Schwartz had a solid career, none of his previous leading roles were part of such a major film series as the Sonic franchise. The actor has already starred in blockbuster films with roles such as a banana peel in The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part or as a member of the voice team for BB-8 in Star Wars: The Force Awakensbut neither of those parts was big enough to see Schwartz really reap the benefits of the franchise. Sonic 1 opened on a four-day holiday weekend, grossing $21 million on day one and racking up $70 million after the four days. If the first sonic the hedgehog the film’s success was an indication of the second’s box office potential, so the sequel was already well placed ahead of its premiere.

With $71 million after three days, the sequel has already greatly surpassed its predecessor which only nearly reached that total in four days. Sonic 2 also broke the box office record for best video game movie opening of all time, a record that Sonic 1 previously held. An impressive feat to say the least, while cinemas are still affected by the drop in pandemic attendance.

Ben Schwartz has reason to be happy with his recent success. Sonic 1 proved to be a massive hit with fans, grossing nearly $320 million at the worldwide box office. With sonic the hedgehog 2 already exceeds Sonic 1 at the box office, the video game adaptation is on track to be one of the highest-grossing films of the year. Schwartz can also be seen in the Apple TV+ murder mystery comedy series After the party and those of Netflix space force season 2.
