Pop star and actress Lady Gaga has confirmed her casting in the upcoming cinematic sequel to the Oscar-winning psychological thriller Joker Thursday by posting a musical teaser on Twitter.
The music video features figures dancing together to the tune of the song “Cheek to Cheek”, originally written by Irving Berlin in 1935 for the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers film. top hatwith the names Phoenix and Gaga flashing on screen.
Joker: Madness for twowhich will see Joaquin Phoenix reprise his role as the title character, is set to hit theaters on October 4, 2024.
Phoenix first played the role in the 2019 film Jokerwhich won him the Academy Award for Best Actor, portrayed an origin story for DC Comics’ superhero nemesis Batman.
No further details about the sequel were immediately made available by Warner Bros. But the Hollywood trade publication Variety reported that the new production will be a musical with Lady Gaga set to play Joker co-conspirator Harley Quinn.
If confirmed, Lady Gaga will be the most recent in a long line of actresses who have played or voiced the iconic character of Harley Quinn. Most recently, Margot Robbie starred as “Gotham City’s Queen of Crime” in the 2020 film Birds of prey and in The Suicide Squad the next year.
It is unknown if Robbie will continue as Harley Quinn. However, the Joker films featuring Phoenix take place in a separate cinematic universe, which would likely mean that Robbie can still reprise his role as the iconic villain in any future films.
